After reviewing many research articles I have come to the conclusion that there is significant evidence to suggest that listening to music while studying will decrease productive student output. From the paper by Johansson et al., we saw that the students scored higher when they did the reading comprehension tasks in silent conditions. From the paper by Christopher, E. A., & Shelton, J.T we saw that working memory has a major impact on how well students are able to focus. The results of that study suggested that for most students it would be a mistake to study listening to music. From the paper by Calderwood, et al., students in a 3hr study period spent 73mins listening to music and therefore being less productive.
Significance
My inquiry question was: What are the implications of phone usage in secondary school classrooms, specifically in terms of productive student output when they listen to music while studying? From the evidence provided by the research papers, listening to music while studying is detrimental to academic performance.
